About Umar

The journey behind the writing.

Born in Pakistan, I have spent my life moving between countries and cultures. Living among customs and convictions taught me to question what I had taken for granted, and to listen before assuming I understood.

My years at the United States Air Force Academy and early years in military aviation were followed by work in technology, finance and entrepreneurship. Each brought lessons in responsibility and judgment, and an awareness of how institutions reach into ordinary lives.

Yet the deepest lessons came through friendship. Across borders marked by war and peace, and lives separated by poverty and wealth, I found kindness, laughter and lasting affection. The closeness of these friendships, set against the distance between their nations, drew me towards stories of love, loyalty and belief, and the choices that unite or divide us.

Those contradictions found their way into my fiction, the craft closest to my heart, letting me explore a life from within, where a conviction has a history and a choice carries a cost. My writings grew from people and places I knew, becoming stories of love and duty, sorrow and hope and a coming of age.

Poetry carries that interest into another form. Alongside my own verse, I translate from Urdu and my native Punjabi into English, hoping to preserve something of the feeling and music that first moved me. It is a way of sharing voices that have accompanied me across the years.

In the end, I write from what life across cultures has left behind: a conversation, a friendship, a place remembered with time. These become the small beginnings of prose and poems, through which I try to understand the world, and the lives within it, more fully.

Professional background

Early flying years.

My professional journey began at the United States Air Force Academy, where I earned a B.S. in applied mathematics. My early years in military aviation later gave way to a career in technology and finance, carrying with me an appreciation for preparation, responsibility and the consequences of decisions. Aviation has remained part of my life: I am a licensed pilot and a skydiving coach. That early grounding still shapes how I approach complex systems, balancing technical precision with an awareness of the people who depend on them.

Over more than twenty-five years, I have worked across enterprise software, banking and entrepreneurship. Early engineering and architecture roles at Ardent Software, Catapulse, WorldInsure and Verax led to building FRS Global’s Canadian operations and leading Oracle’s Risk and Compliance practice across the Middle East and Africa. At Varo, I joined the founding technology leadership team, helping build the foundations of a digital bank. During eight years at Salesforce, I helped shape Financial Services Cloud and architected AI-agent solutions for financial institutions. I later led Enterprise Architecture and Delivery at Tessera Labs. Today, as founder of Sayaa.ai, I am working on runtime assurance for autonomous financial systems, exploring how their actions can remain within defined responsibilities and controls.

Alongside my career, I earned an M.S. in computer science from Wichita State University, a Ph.D. in finance from INCEIF and an M.S. in machine learning from Georgia Tech. I am also a Salesforce Certified Technical Architect. My doctoral research with Abbas Mirakhor examined risk-sharing, equity-based finance and antifragility. Teaching has offered another way to connect that learning with practice, through appointments at UC Berkeley Extension, SP Jain School of Global Management and Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University, as well as computer science teaching and mentorship through iCodeGuru.

These strands meet in my writing. Antifragility of Islamic Finance draws on my research into financial resilience, while Banking 3.0 explores the architecture required as intelligence moves closer to action. Both reflect questions that have followed me through my professional life: how systems shape our choices, and how we respond when circumstances change. Fiction remains closest to my heart, giving those questions a human scale through the lives, relationships and decisions of individual characters.
